The embattled leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu will on May 20, know his fate on his application for transfer from DSS custody. This is as the Federal High Court Abuja, Justice, Binta Nyako on Wednesday, fixed May 20 for ruling.
Justice Nyako adjourned for ruling after listening to arguments on the application from Kanu’s counsels.
According to CHANNELS TELEVISION, the Counsel for the defendant, Aloy Ejimakor, on Wednesday, moved the application to prepare him for trial.
He said, Kanu’s continued detention in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) would mitigate the accelerated hearing ordered by the court.
Ejimakor said they are seeking the transfer of the defendant from the DSS’ detention to a house arrest. He maintained that other than the DSS, they would prefer other similar places of custody. Or similar law enforcement agency’s custody.
The Counsel stated that some personalities had in the past enjoyed the privilege. He listed these to include the ex-National Security Adviser (NSA), Sambo Dasuki and leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (aka Shi’ite), Sheikh Ibraheem El-Zakzaky.
But in his submission, the counsel for the prosecution, Adegboyega Awolomo swiftly countered Ejimakor. He urged the court to dismiss the defendant’s application.
However, after hearing arguments from the two parties, Justice Nyako subsequently fixed May 20 for ruling on the matter.
