The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Tuesday predicted prospects of moderate to heavy rainfall in several States of the country starting from Wednesday to Friday.
The agency stated that heavy rainfall is expected from the early hours of Wednesday in parts of Oyo, Kwara and Osun. Other States to experience heavy down pour are Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, Taraba and Plateau. Also included are Niger, Ogun, Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory and Zamfara State.
NiMet, however, maintained that light to moderate rainfall is anticipated over the rest of the country, within the period.
The agency warned that the extremely heavy rainfall could cause flash flooding and riverine flooding. It also warned that could cause soil erosion, thunder and lightning, and strong winds.
Areas whose rainfall will be accompanied by strong winds are parts of Oyo, Kwara, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Kogi and Bayelsa. Others are Rivers, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Benue, Taraba, Plateau, Niger, Ogun, Kaduna, the Federal Capital Territory and Zamfara states.
NiMet, therefore, advised the public not to drive through surface runoff waters, as they have strong undercurrents.
It maintained that other likely hazards of the runoff waters include slippery road surfaces and reduced visibility during the rain. The agency stated that these could disrupt road traffic.
NiMet, also, advised the public to disconnect electrical appliances before and not during the rains.
