Nigerian President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given reasons for his administration’s reform policies. The President revealed that the policies were aimed at making Nigeria work for everyone.
He noted that the pains that come with the reforms must first be endured before the gains.
Tinubu made the remark at the 48th convocation ceremony of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, on Saturday.
He said, “I was neither unaware of the harsh economic situation in the country nor do I take pleasure in inflicting pains and anguish on my compatriots.
Represented by the Special Adviser to the President on Economy, Office of the Vice President, Tope Fasua, Tinubu assured that he will continue to do his best to ensure the country works for everyone rather than engaging in blame games.
The President also disclosed that he has embraced both the assets and liabilities of his predecessors.
“We were faced with the stark reality of results of some policies hitherto executed by past administrations. But which had no direct positive impact on the generality of our people.
“We have gladly accepted the assets and liabilities of our heroes past without any intention of apportioning blames. Or pointing an accusing finger at any individual or group of people.
“As we are trying to fix, reconfigure, and correct past mistakes and errors, we implore all Nigerians to cooperate with us. And to endure this unintentional hardship so that, like the graduates of today, we all can celebrate and be celebrated at the end of the day. I am certainly seeing the light at the end of our tunnel,” Tinubu said.
In his submission, the Pro-Chancellor of the university, Professor Siyan Oyeweso, congratulated the graduates. He, however, charged them to deploy the knowledge to the development of the society. He urged them to continue to always add values to their nation and their immediate environments.
The Chancellor of the university and the Etsu Nupe, Alhaji Yahaya Abubakar, in his address, praised the institution. He, therefore, described education as a necessary tool for development in any given nation.
He, however, advised the graduands to also try their best in imparting more knowledge on those seeking it for a better society.
