Agriculture has to do with the cultivation of the soil, the planting of crops and the rearing of animals. It is from agriculture that food and feed are produced to sustain life.
Agriculture does not only produce food, but also generate lots of employment opportunities. In consequence, the importance of agriculture cannot be overemphasized.
Like other fields of human endeavour, agriculture has its source of resources. Its primary source of resources is the land. It is the land that gives the soil and space on which agriculture is practiced.
Where the land is grossly converted to other uses apart from agriculture, agricultural practices become affected.
Depletion of land Mass due to flagrant diversions to other projects has its grave economic implantation! Apart from shortages in food production and supplies, unemployment problems generated is always enormous.
There is need for strict land use laws and monitor to checkmate the current excesses in land usages .
Other nations have devised advanced and diverse means of agricultural practices. Some are growing their crops in the laboratories; others are growing their crops on the walls.
Nigeria that is over blessed with enormous land mass is rather wasting such a blessing!. She could barely produce enough food for her citizens, talk of exporting to other nations!
She can hardly feed her citizens due to nervous paralysis of the will of the ruling class. The ruling class has failed to improve on the nation’s agricultural methods and techniques.
Apart from flagrant land depletion practices, outdated methods and tools are still very much in use.
There is, therefore, the need to address these retrogressive practices for the nation to survive the pending famine!
