The Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has directed the arrest and prosecution of six staffers of the State Ministry of Health.
Recall that Nwifuru had over the weekend busted on some staff of the Ministry of Health loading materials of the ministry into vehicles with the intent to selling them.
The Governor who was captured in a video was shown expressing disappointment with the culprits. Nwifuru told them that he did not know the spirit that asked him to branch off to the Ministry. This, he said, is because, that was not the first time he had observed people loading materials into vehicles. The Governor said he sees that whenever he was passing the area.
However, on Sunday, the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, CPS, Monday Uzor stated that the Governor has ordered the arrested of Ndukwe Ayansi and five others for alleged theft.
The statement read, “Governor Nwifuru, while on his way to inspect ongoing projects, noticed a Toyota Dyana truck being loaded with registers, books, and other materials from the Ministry of Health’s warehouse.
“The Governor drove in and made inquiries but not satisfied with answers. He probed further and discovered that patients’ data registers, cards and a host of documents were moved into the vehicle.
“It was also discovered that all the documents had been sold without government approval,” the CPS said
Speaking at the scene of the crime, the Governor described the action as sabotage. He noted that the Government has been making efforts at repositioning the health sector, but the staff of the Ministry are selling off the materials.
The Governor said, “I have not been in office for almost two years. But I have spent more than N6 billion buying equipment for the Primary Healthcare Centers and the General Hospitals.
“And this is what you people, the store keepers, are doing. You are selling government documents without approval on a Saturday afternoon.
“Our hospitals in the rural areas are requesting for registers and data entry forms and hospital cards. Sadly, the ones the Government has produced are being sold by you”, Nwifuru lamented.
The Chief Press Secretary added that the suspects have been handed over to the police, while investigation continues.
