The Lagos State Government through the Lagos State Building Control Agency, LASBCA, has issued a two-week ultimatum to residents of over 15 distressed buildings in the Iponri Housing Estate, Surulere, Lagos.

This was contained in a statement by The General Manager of LASBCA, Gbolahan Oki said this in a letter signed by the Director, Public Affairs, Adu Ademuyiwa, on Saturday in Lagos.

He said: “Asking residents to vacate distressed buildings to enable us to pull them down is in the best interest of the public.

“The deteriorating condition of some of the distressed buildings poses a great danger. As their integrity has been compromised and can give way any time”.

Oki pledged the government’s commitment to taking swift action to address the situation and ensure public safety.

The General Manger emphasized the importance of complying with building safety regulations to prevent future incidents.

Oki, therefore, urged all parties involved, including the residents, the government, and LASBCA, to prioritize public safety. He urged residents to adhere to the evacuation order.

The GM, however, assured the public that the agency would continue to monitor buildings across the State. This, he said, is to identify other structures that might pose similar risks to avert dangers

Among dignitaries at the event included the member representing Surulere Constituency 1, Lagos State House of Assembly member Desmond Elliot.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu was represented by his Special Adviser on Housing, Barakat Bakare. The duo implored the residents not to compromise standards, but abide by the building codes and regulations.
