The Nasarawa State Government has stated its plan to abolish the Ministry of Local Government and the State-Local Government Joint Account in the State.

According to the Government, the plan is a step towards the restructuring the Local Government system in conformity with the ruling of the Supreme Court.

Recall that the apex court had in July judgment granted financial autonomy to Local Government administration in the country.

Towards achieving this, the State Government has forwarded an Executive bill to the House of Assembly seeking to amend the Local Government Law in the State.

This was disclosed by the Speaker of the Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Danladi Jatau on Monday.

The Bill was read for the first time during Monday’s sitting in Lafia.

The motion for the Bill was moved by the House Leader Suleiman Azara and seconded by the Minority Leader Luka Zhekaba.

The Speaker stated that the Executive Bill seeks to amend the existing LG Law in the State to conform with the Supreme Court judgement on financial autonomy.

Jatau then slated Wednesday, October 16, 2024 for the second reading of the Bill.

Recall that on July 11, 2024, the Supreme Court delivered a landmark judgment affirming the financial autonomy of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Councils.

The judgement is expected to refine the business of governance at the grassroots in the country.

Following the apex court, State Governors have taken measures to review, restructure, and re-enact Local Government Laws in their State.

Addressing journalists shortly after the day’s sitting, the Chairman House Committee on Information Jonah Ali Dizaho stated the need for the Bill.

He said the State Government wants to restructure the Local Government laws to enable it to conform with the reality of the time.

“The amendment of the LG Law will among other things abolish the existing Joint Accounts. As well as abolish the State Ministry for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs,” he said.
