Edo State Government has embarked on a comprehensive sensitization campaign to combat the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people in the State.

According to reports drug-related issues account for the majority of young people requiring rehabilitation in the State.

This was disclosed by the Permanent Secretary of Social Development and Gender, Barbara Osobajo, during the flag-off  of the programme in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area.

Represented by the Director of the Rehabilitation Department, Sylvester Okeguale, the Perm Sec stated that the initiative would be replicated in Edo Central and Edo South Senatorial Districts, respectively, later in the month.

Osobajo said the programme tagged “Catch Them Young” was aimed at educating schoolchildren and stakeholders on the dangers of substance abuse. It also underscoring the urgency of the issue and the importance of awareness.

According to Perm Sec, in response to the growing scourge of drug abuse among young people, the ministry has initiated a programme to combat substance abuse.

She said,  “Our children are the future, but the future is now under threat. Due to the alarming rate of drug abuse among young people. We must act now to prevent this menace from destroying our youth,”

“The message emphasized the urgency and collective responsibility required to address the issue,” she added.

Earlier, the Chairman of Etsako West Local Government Council, Zibiri Muhizu Marvelous, commended the State Government’s efforts. He emphasized the critical need for community engagement to combat the scourge.

Marvelous, however, noted that addressing drug abuse requires a multifaceted approach. And this involves parents, educational institutions, and community organizations.

The Chairman, however, recognized the crucial role parents play in preventing substance abuse among young people. He, therefore, encouraged parents to stay actively involved in their children’s lives to mitigate the influence of peer pressure.

Marvelous also called for a united front to ensure that youth receive the necessary guidance and support.

The facilitator, Purpose Ehigie, while delivering a comprehensive presentation, shed more light on the alarming dangers of substance abuse.

He highlighted the risks associated with prescriptive medications, alcohol, and other seemingly harmless substances.

Ehigie, however, stressed that curbing substance abuse among youths demands proactive measures.

He, therefore, advocated that early education and intervention are key to empowering children and adolescents to develop healthy habits and coping mechanisms.

“This approach aims to “catch them young” and foster a safer, healthier future,” he added.
