The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike yesterday revealed the reasons behind the persisting political crisis rocking the oil rich Rivers State.

According to the former Rivers State Governor, the cause of Monday’s mayhem in Rivers State was as a result of Governor  Siminalayi Fubara’s disobedience of court order.

Wike said, “The moment you don’t obey court judgment, you are inviting anarchy, you are inviting violence.”

The Minister alleged that Fubara once admitted that Rivers “was turning to state” where the rule of law is not obeyed.

The strongman of Rivers politics made this disclosure while featuring on a national television programme on Tuesday night.

“I was a Governor, and I have always obeyed the rule of law. You heard the Governor say that our State is turning to a state of anarchy. Where people do not obey the rule of law.

“You must obey the judgment of a court. You must not take the law into your own hands. The moment you don’t obey court judgment, you are inviting anarchy, you are inviting violence,” Wike said.

“And those who went to court, what did they do for the judiciary to settle disputes? And you came up as a governor to say, ‘No, this is a fraudulent judgment’, accusing judiciary of being fraudulent. ‘I will not obey this judgment. I will not and I will go ahead and do what I’m trying to do’.

“In that case, who is inviting violence? Who is inviting anarchy?” Wike queried.

The former Governor argued that by defying the court’s decision, Fubara has set a dangerous precedent. “One that undermines the very fabric of democracy in the State and the nation.

“This country is a country where you see people trying to use opportunity, because Wike is here. I have a grouse about Wike. I want to settle that grouse. This is the only way I can do it.

“If today a court gives a judgment, and you refuse to obey: you forget that it’s not about Wike. It’s about society. It’s about State. And it’s about our nation.

“INEC said, ‘We will comply with the court judgment’. What did they do? That the REC, the Resident Electoral Commissioner, who acted on behalf of his office, he should be removed. Why? Because he said, ‘Look, we are going to comply with court judgment.”

“Police said, ‘Look, we are party to this suit. The court has stopped us. And therefore, we are going to comply with judgment’.

“Fubara said, ‘No, get out. I don’t care. You don’t need to’. DSS was stopped.

And I said, ‘Look, you don’t do this. We are not in a lawless society’.”

“I feel so bad today when people talk about derailing democracy.

“Who is derailing democracy? Is it the man who says law and order should be respected, or the one who refuses to obey the courts?”.
