The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti; the only Labour Party governor in the country, has given reasons for the appointment of Caretaker Committee to manage the affairs of the party in the interim.

He said there was urgent need to save the party from an impending danger that may lead to its extinction.

Otti, gave the reasons while hosting the meeting at the Banquet Hall of the Government House in Umuahia.

The Governor, however, clarified that he was not interested in whoever becomes the National Chairman of the party.

He maintained that if the party was not rescued, it may jeopardize its participation in future elections.

On the leadership crisis rocking the party, Otti said the Abure-led leadership has the right to challenge the decision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the court.

Otti point out that it is better for LP to avoid any action that may render its actions illegal in the future.

However, the embattled National Chairman of the Labour Party, Julius Abure, has rejected the 29-member interim committee.

The National Working Committee(NWC), led by Abure, a lawyer, described the caretaker committee as  unconstitutional.

Former Senator Esther Nnenadi Usman, while accepting to lead the party, promised to embark on a rescue mission.

The former Minister of State for Finance, was appointed alongside, three representatives from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). Also appointed were three representatives of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), and three Senators. There were also four House of Representatives members, three House of Assembly members, representatives from six geo-political zones, and four former governorship candidates.

The committee’s term of reference is the conduct of party congresses and the national convention within 90 days.
