Amidst rising cases of cybercrimes in Nigeria, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has urged students to become whistleblowers against perpetrators of the crime.

The anti-graft agency, therefore, expressed its willingness to collaborate with the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS in the fight. The Commission also encouraging members of the students’ body to act as whistleblowers on cybercrimes.

This was disclosed by the acting Zonal Director of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Lagos Zonal Office, Michael T. Wetkas.

He made the disclosure while receiving members of NANS on a courtesy visit to his office in Lagos on Thursday, June 20, 2024.

Wetkas used the opportunity of the occasion to charge students across the country to embrace original and creative thinking. He urged them to shun cybercrimes.

The Zonal Director described the youth as the “building blocks of the nation”. But warned that cybercrime poses a serious threat to the development of the country.

He said: “The strength of any nation lies in its youths and educational level. The country needs a generation of progressive individuals who will maximize their talents.”

Wetkas regretted that cybercrime had now evolved from the traditional “yahoo plus” to more sophisticated forms such as sextortion.

In his speech, the National Senate Clerk of NANS, Oladimeji Uthman, expressed his gratitude to the EFCC for its swift response to the request for the visit.

He assured that NANS would be more committed to the fight against internet fraud.

The Chairman of the Lagos State Chapter of NANS, Alimi Lekan Idris, also spoke at the occasion. In his submission, he sought a collaboration with the EFCC in the area of sensitization.

Idris stated that NANS will embark on programmes to educate students on the dangers and consequences of cybercrimes during the Association’s annual students’ weeks.
