A Police Inspector, Ubi Ebri has been sentenced to death by the Delta State High Court sitting at Asaba on Tuesday for killing a phone dealer.

The Court presided over by Justice C. D. Diai convicted and sentenced Ebri to death for killing a phone dealer, Onyeka Ibeh.

According to report, the phone dealer, Ibeh and his wife was driving from Ugbolu to Asaba on April 5, 2023, when they were flagged down by the police team for a search.

The deceased stopped and parked his car to be searched. But after waiting for a while to be searched, and they were not being attended to, he decided to drive away.

His action, however, infuriated the Police Inspector, who immediately, opened fire into the vehicle. One of the bullets hit Ibeh on the head and caused his death on the spot.

His wife, who also was seating in the front of the car was unhurt.

The killing, however, precipitated protests by youths along the streets of Asaba. They marched the streets and later headed to police headquarters to demand justice for the deceased.

The case however, snowballed into a court case where the prosecution, led by a Director in the Ministry of Justice, E.H. Edema, accused the policeman of killing Ibeh.

Presenting his case, Edema alleged that the defendant was part of a police patrol team that mounted a stop and search exercise on April 5, 2023, along the Ugbolu Asaba Road in the State Capital.

Addressing journalists after the judgment, Edema said, “Today’s judgement is a landmark judgement. This is because justice has been served in this case to the deceased and society at large.”

Also, the elder brother of the deceased, Ifeanyi Ibeh, who witnessed the judgement, also commended the court. He said the court has delivered justice to his family.
