The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has made a pronouncement on the confrontation between its officials and officers of the Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIO, in Abuja in Friday.
According to report, the NCS promised to investigate the confrontation between its officers and Vehicle Inspection Officers, VIO, at the AYA Roundabout, Abuja VIO Office.
IVNTV NEWS sighted a video on social media, where the officers were engaged in a physical altercation and exchanged of punches. The video recording captured where the officers employed the use sticks and other dangerous weapons to attack one another. Gunshots were also heard as the fighting raged on amidst shouting by some women.
But in a statement Tuesday signed by NCS spokesperson, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident.
Maiwada said the personnel in the video were from the Customs Mechanical Unit stationed at Karu Barracks, Abuja.
The statement, however, expressed deep concern and empathy for those affected by the regrettable incident. NCS, also, distanced itself from the actions of the officers involved.
It maintained that the behaviour of the officers was self-motivated and contrary to the values and operational standards of the NCS.
Maiwada pointed that an investigation is underway. He stated that an appropriate disciplinary measures will be taken to prevent future occurrences.
The statement read, “It is essential to state that this incident contradicts the values and operational standards of the NCS. Such behaviour undermines one of the key policy thrusts of the Comptroller-General of Customs. Which is to foster collaboration with sister security agencies and other stakeholders. And to ensure the safety and security of Nigerians and their property.
“The NCS, under the leadership of CGC Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, MFR, and his Management Team, strongly condemns such conduct. And does not tolerate any actions jeopardizing the commitment to professionalism and inter-agency cooperation.
“The Service remains steadfast in its mission to generate revenue and facilitate trade. And to suppress smuggling and support a more robust and secure economy for all Nigerians,” it said.
