The Society for Family Health (SFH) has reported that 27, 000 women in Niger State have embraced self injection contraceptive method of birth control.

This was disclosed by the Country Social & Behaviour Change Coordinator, Delivering Innovation in Self Care (DISC) project of Society for Family Health, Michael Titus. He stated that this was the figure for the first quarter of 2024.

Presenting the report titled: “Niger State FP/ DMPA – SC PERFORMANCE: DISC PROJECT IMPACT”, from July 2021 to March 2024, Titus stated that 2,000 woman had embraced the method at the inception of the project in 2021 across 10 Local Government Areas of the State.

He said, “Self injection method number grew from 2,000 women at inception to 27, 000 at the end of the first quarter of 2024.”

Titus stated that with empathetic counseling, the self injection rate in the State has significantly grown the base line of 14 percent in 2021. He emphasized that it, however, peaked at 55% in the second quarter of 2023. And now, at 51% at the first quarter of 2024.

“Over 300% growth in self injection rate in the State shows that 52 of every 100 women who opt DMPA- SC as their method of choice are self injecting. They were successful under the supervision of the health provider,” he said.
