Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has blamed the rising instability in the Northern part of the country to two factors: climate change and forced migration.
The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, said climate change has forced herders to migrate to other parts of Nigeria.
Ganduje made the assertion at a Fulfulde Poetry Competition organized by Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto.
The APC National Chairman stated that the relationship between farmers and herders used to be symbiotic. But maintained that climate change brought about the forced migration of the Fulani to other parts of the country.
On his part, the Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu stated that the State Government is investing heavily in intelligence gathering. He maintained that information sharing will enhance the prevention of security breaches in the State.
He said, “Security apparatuses are being strengthened through the provision of tools and training. And by the State Government empowering the Community to actively participate in securing the neighbourhood.”
The Governor who was represented by his Deputy, Idris Mohammed Gobir, said his government would continue to prioritize community engagement and dialogue. Which is a means of building trust and fostering cooperation between security and citizens. Through town hall meetings, community policy initiatives and the establishment of neighbourhood watch groups.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Lawal Suleiman Bilbis, thanked the guests for honouring their invitation. He said poems had been used from time immemorial to bring peace and stability among various communities.
