The Abia State Government has stated its commitment to implement the compulsory free education for primary schools and Junior Secondary Schools 1–3  in the State in 2025.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Goodluck Ubochi, stated that the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti has approved the free education.

Ubochi made this disclosure in Umuahia on Friday when his ministry received Abia State students who performed exceptionally well in the recently concluded 27th National Junior Engineers, Technicians, and Scientists, JETS, competition held in Abuja.

The Commissioner explained that free education is part of Governor Alex Otti’s efforts to transform the education sector in the State.

He highlighted that the JETS competition provided a platform for students to showcase their ingenuity and creativity. The competition, he said, also challenged young minds to find innovative solutions to complex problems while enhancing their academic potential.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Education, Kenechukwu Nwosu, and the Executive Board Chairman of ASUBEB, Mrs. Lydia Onuoha, attributed the remarkable achievements of the students to the State Government’s special interest in the education sector.

The Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, Abia State Chapter, Friday Madu, commended the students for their excellent performance at the national JETS competition.

Highlight of the occasion was the presentation of learning equipment to the young scholars. While their teachers received cash rewards from the State Government.

In a related development, the Abia State Government has disowned a fake N25,000 Christmas grant advertisement trending on social media.

Recall that recently, an online advert declared a N25,000 Christmas cash grant for Abians from Governor Alex Otti. The advert also provided a link for interested persons to apply.

However, the Abia Government has disowned the advert. Describing those behind it as criminals.

A statement signed by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Ukoha Njoku Ukoha, on Friday, dismissed the advert. He noted that the offer was a deliberate criminal attempt to deceive and scam unsuspecting Abians at this Christmas season.

Ukoha, therefore, advised Abians to shun the fake N25,000 offer. This is even as he stated that security agencies have been alerted to the scam. The CPS pointed out that the agencies have been mandated to investigate and arrest those behind the scam.

Ukoha further added that all the State Government’s social investment, welfare, and intervention programmes are published on the official website.
