With politicians of the northern extraction gearing up for the presidential election in 2027, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, has asked them to shelve their political ambitions.

This is even as he advised the politicians to wait till 2031 when President Bola Ahmed Tinubu would have completed his second tenure.

Akume, who was specifically referencing former Vice President Atiku Abubakar asked him to forget contesting in the 2027 election.

The SGF noted that if God wants him to be president, he can win an election at the age of 90.

Akume made the statement on Sunday while featuring on a TVC programme on politics.

The SGF, while fielding question on the 2027 presidential election, said it is still the turn of the South to produce the president.

He said President Tinubu has not lost goodwill among Nigerians as a result of his economic policies.

Recall that most of the President’s economic policies, including the controversial tax reform bills have left most Nigerians in distress.

But Akume noted that the tax reform bills as a well-envisioned proposed legislations would help the country when passed by the National Assembly.

“President Tinubu as a southerner,  should be allowed to have a second term. Meaning that those eyeing the Presidency from the North in 2027 should look beyond that year by waiting till 2031.

“If it is the will of God for Alhaji Atiku Abubakar to be President of Nigeria, he will.  Even at the age of 90 years, he can get it. But he and other northerners eyeing the office now should look beyond 2027,” the SGF said.

Akume, therefore, appealed to Nigerians to allow the bills to scale through the required legislative processes.

According to him, they are well-envisioned for Nigeria and Nigerians.
