The Kano State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (PCACC) has uncovered the hoarding of rebranded 50kg bags of rice in a warehouse in Kano city.
According to the anti-graft agency, over 16,800 bags of 50kg rice branded with President Tinubu’s image, was recovered in a warehouse in Kano city. The agency noted that the bags of rice were valued at more than N1 billion.
This was disclosed by the Chairman of the Commission, Muhuyi Magaji, on Tuesday.
Magaji revealed the discovery while embarking on a press tour of the warehouse located on Ring Road in the city.
The Chairman noted that the rice, which had been re-bagged was allegedly moved to the warehouse in 28 trailers. With each trailer containing 600 bags. Magaji stated that rice was intended as a Federal Government palliatives to the people of Kano State.
The Chairman revealed that the bags, were branded with the portrait of President Tinubu and the inscription “Not For Sale; The Renewed Hope for Unity and Progress,”. He, however, pointed out that rice had been repackaged under the label “Elephant Classic Parboiled Rice.”
Condemning the act, Magaji described the act as criminal and shameful. He, however, narrated that the discovery followed tips off by some good people of Kano State.
According to him, one culprit has been arrested by the Commission. He noted that the probe of the culprit is expected to lead to more arrests.
He said, “The 16,800 bags of rice were meant for the last Ramadan festival. But were diverted to this warehouse and are being re-bagged into another label bags and to be resold.
“The rice has the name of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, bodily written: His Excellency Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Not For Sale; 50kg Ramadan Kareem.
“However, this bags of rice were being re-bagged into another bags labeled: Big Mama Rice, Premium Quality. And another bag tagged; Elephant Classic Parboiled Rice, 100% sortexed.”
“All the necessary information about this sad shoddy deal would be passed to the State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf and President Bola Tinubu for necessary action to be taken against the culprits.
“This criminal act would not be tolerated -diverting, re-bagging and selling rice palliatives meant for the poor.”
