The National Economic Council (NEC) has given the Governments of Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa States one week to submit their reports on the proposed creation of state police. This is even as the Council threaten to sanction any State that failed to meet the deadline.
This was contained in statement issued by the Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri, while briefing State House correspondents on Thursday in Abuja.
Speaking after the Council meeting presided over by Vice President Kashim Shettima, Diri warned of the consequence of not meeting the deadline. He said, “Failure to present their reports within the specified timeframe, the NEC will take “appropriate decisions” regarding the matter.”
Recall that the push for the creation of state police has been ongoing since February 15. This is even when the Federal Government had formed a Committee to explore the idea.
According to Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, President Bola Tinubu and the State Governors’ had already agreed on the broad modalities for the establishment of state police.
The Minister further emphasized that a series of meetings would take place to assess the feasibility of a decentralized police force. He noted that the discussions would focus on determining the most effective way to implement the system.
In March, the NEC reported that 20 States had yet to submit their reports on the potential establishment of state police.
In September, the Council issued a warning that it would make decisions for any State that failed to meet the deadline.
The latest directive to Kwara, Kebbi, and Adamawa follows a similar warning issued in September, when NEC threatened to impose decisions on any state that had not complied with the request for reports.
