Vice President Kamala Harris has outlined a bold commitment to legalize recreational marijuana if elected. The VP made the disclosure just a few hours left before the November 5, 2024 United States presidential election.
This was contained in a post on her official X account on Sunday.
Rounding off her campaign, the Democrats presidential candidate promised a comprehensive plan to reform outdated drug laws. She also promised expanded opportunities within the cannabis industry.
Her stance marks a shift in the US drug policy, aiming to address what she described as long-standing inequalities within the criminal justice system.
Recall that advocates for cannabis reform have long argued that current laws disproportionately impact minority communities. Thus, creating barriers to employment and economic opportunities.
Harris’s plan would not only legalize recreational marijuana nationwide but also dismantle these systemic obstacles, if implemented.
She wrote, “I will legalize recreational marijuana. Break down unjust legal barriers, and create opportunities for all Americans to succeed in this new industry.”
The November 6 election will be the 60th quadrennial presidential election. During the election, voters will select electors for the Electoral College. Who will, in turn, elect the President and Vice President for a four-year term.
Kamala Harris, the first woman to serve as U.S. Vice President, aims to make history again by becoming the country’s first female President.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump seeks a return to the White House after his 2020 defeat. He served as US President between 2016 and 2020.
