Two Junior Secondary School 3 students have landed in police custody for allegedly stealing 100 mobile phones at at a mobile phone shop in Wunti Market, in the Bauchi State.
According to the Bauchi State Police Command, the suspects, both 15-year-old students of Bakari Dukku Comprehensive Secondary School, were arrested following an investigation conducted by the Operation Restore Peace (ORP) unit after the shop owner alerted the police about the missing items.
The Command stated that teenage students were involved in the alleged theft of 100 mobile phones, 75 MP4 players, 30 cell phone batteries, 50 external memory cards, and a Bluetooth headset.
In a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, Ahmed Wakil, the incident occurred on October 1, 2024.
The operation for the arrest was led by CSP Kim Albert, under the directive of the Commissioner of Police, CP Auwal Musa.
The suspects, identified as Hamza Sadiq and Adamu Ahmadu, were said to have confessed to committing the crime. They stated that they obtained the key to the shop and exploited when the owner of the shop was absent.
According to the statement, the suspects sold the stolen goods at reduced prices. And used the proceeds to buy personal items such as clothes, food, and a smartphone.
It stated, however, that the Police recovered 21 mobile phones and 5 MP4 players. Other items are a mobile phone charger, and a metal key from the suspects. It also said that efforts are ongoing to recover the remaining stolen items.”
Wakil further revealed that the teenagers will be remanded in a rehabilitation facility following the completion of the investigation.
