The crisis in the Labour Party, LP, has taken another turn as the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has finally recognized the Julius Abure leadership of the party.

The is even as Peter Obi and Alex Otti have lost out in the leadership struggle in the opposition party.

Recall that LP had been enmeshed in leadership tango between the Abure-led National Working Committee, NWC, and a faction of the party under Obi and Otti.

Recall also that the Abia State Governor, Alex Otti had appointed a National Caretaker Committee led by former Minister of Finance, Nenadi Usman to over the affairs of the party pending the convocation of a national convention.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC had also delisted Abure-led NWC, saying that its tenure had elapsed in June.

But in a volta face, INEC, in a letter addressed to Abure and Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, signed by the Secretary of the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, invited the Labour Party to the Fourth Consultative meeting with political parties.

IVNTV NEWS recalls that a Federal High Court in Abuja had earlier declared that the 2024 Labour Party National Convention held in Nnewi in March was valid. The court stated that it was carried out in line with the party’s Constitution and all laid down laws in Nigeria.

In the judgement by Justice Emeka Nwite, the court compelled INEC to grant due recognition and all privileges to the Labour Party’s National Working Committee as led by Barrister Julius Abure.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting with INEC on Thursday, the National Secretary of the LP, Umar Farouk Ibrahim expressed satisfaction with the development.

Ibrahim stated that though the party was unjustly excluded from previous engagements, he was satisfied that INEC has obeyed the court order.

The National Secretary said the party has now resumed seat amongst the other 18 political parties in the country.

He said, with this development, LP is set for the rest of the political activities including the Anambra governorship election.

Recall that INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu had on Thursday announced November 8, 2025 date for the Anambra State election.

“With the issue of leadership now completely resolved, I urge every member of the party to rally round the Abure. What transpired is only a family affair. And we will, as a family, work towards restoring confidence to the party. We will also work to reconcile every aggrieved or misled member of the party, Ibrahim said.

“The Labour Party will come back stronger. But we need everyone to join in the process of rebuilding the party.

“It is a no victor nor vanquish situation. We are all winners. The party is however, supreme. And every member must work towards achieving set targets of the party,” the National Secretary said.
