The Federal Government of Nigerian has met with the leadership of the Organized Labour at the office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, George Akume, Abuja  on Wednesday.

According to CHANNELS TV report, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, led the Federal Government’s side. While the organized labour was led by Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), President, Joe Ajaero and Trade Union Congress (TUC) Secretary General, Nuhu Toro.

CHANNELS TV also reported that the Minister of State for Labour, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha; Minister of Finance, Wale Edun; and Minister of Budget and National Planning, Atiku Bagudu; were all in attendance.

The report stated that the agenda of the meeting was not made public.

Recall that the Organized Labour has been unhappy with the recent increases in the pump price of petrol. They are also not happy with the increases in electricity tariff, galloping inflation, and the high cost of living in the country.

Recall also that last week, Wednesday, petrol retail outlets owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) adjusted the pump price of petrol in Lagos and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

NNPCL outlets in Lagos now sell a litre of petrol for ₦998, about ₦150 higher than the initial price of ₦855.

In Abuja, NNPCL retail stations also adjusted the pump price of petrol from ₦897 to ₦1,030.

Recall that between June 2023 and October 2024, the NNPCL has had to adjust petrol pump price on many occasions. The price per litre of petrol was raised from ₦184 to ₦568 last June, 2023.

The PMS, also known as petrol or fuel was hiked from ₦568 to ₦855 in September 2024. And again, in October, 2024, the pump price was hiked to N1, 030 from N897.

A development that have become a source of worry the Nigerian as the cost of living has skyrocketed.

Recall that the organized labour has had to embark on national wide strike to demand new minimum wage as a result of the effects of the removal of petrol subsidy.
