National Orientation Agency (NOA) has launched a nationwide sensitization campaign as part of its efforts to addressing the diminishing patriotism and loyalty of Nigerians to the nation. This is even as the agency has resolved to bring out change in the character value of Nigerians towards the country.

This was disclosed by the Director General of the Agency, Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, during the official flagging off of the campaign in Gombe State.

Speaking at a press conference, in Gombe over the weekend, Issa-Onilu emphasized the need for revamping of the country’s values.

The Director-General who was represented by the National Director, Planning Research and Strategy of the Agency, Nura Aliyu Kobi, stated the need for the programme.

Issa-Onilu said, “Many Nigerians may start asking such questions as, ‘is this the priority, or is this the next thing?

“But, it is a priority to promote such things that bind us together and also make Nigeria a priority. Thus, it’s our contribution to the task of nation building.”

He also stressed the importance of reorienting Nigerians on the values of the nation, saying that the time has come to rebuild citizens’ sense of duty to the nation.

“We must build Nigerians to build Nigeria,” the DG quoted President Bola Tinubu.

Issa-Onilu noted that the campaign is focused on renewing citizens’ commitment to national unity, patriotism, and the values that bind the country together.

He said, “The campaign will center on the National Anthem and the National Values Charter. Both of which serve as pillars of the Nigerian identity.”

“The National Anthem is not just a ceremonial song. But a reflection of Nigeria’s struggles, aspirations, and commitment to justice and prosperity.

“The National Values Charter outlines seven promises from the Government to its citizens, including equality, peace, security, and meritocracy. While the citizens are expected to uphold values such as discipline, patriotism, and integrity.

“The campaign will run from October to December 2024. And will involve various programmes at State and Local levels, including town hall meetings, school outreach initiatives, and community fora.”

In her welcome address, Gombe State Director of NOA, Adaline Waye Patari, spoke on the need for the programme.

She said, “In Gombe State, we have structured various impactful activities to ensure that this campaign resonates with people from all walks of life.

“Our activities will include: Press Conferences to inform and educate the media about the significance of the campaign. And a Town Hall Meetings that will foster dialogues between community members and leaders to promote the essence of our National Anthem and National Value Charter.

“There will be roadshows across different parts of the State to raise awareness and engage directly with citizens, school visitations. Where we will educate the younger generation about our national symbols and values, reinforcing patriotism and civic responsibility. And media engagements to ensure that the message is amplified across all platforms for maximum outreach.

“Furthermore, there will be advocacy visits to key stakeholders, Government agencies (MDAs) as well as religious and traditional institutions. This is to encourage their support and collaboration in spreading these vital messages.

“Additionally, our committed staff will be dispatched across the entire State, covering all 11 Local Government Areas. To sensitize people on the National Anthem, the National Value Charter, and the programs, policies, and initiatives of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.”

Patari acknowledge and deeply appreciated the media for their continued partnership in helping NOA achieve its mandate. This, she said, the media has done through communicating government policies, programs, and activities to the public.

According to her, the feedback loops you help create are critical in ensuring that citizens remain informed and engaged.

“Once again, I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all present. As I look forward to your active participation as we embark on this journey to strengthen national consciousness. And to promote unity through the values that define us as Nigerians,” Patari said.
