The Local Government Chairman of Isa Council area of Sokoto State, Sharifu Kamarawa has raised the alarm of the activities of bandits in the area.

According to Kamarawa, bandits control vast areas of the Local Government, appoint traditional rulers and settle disputes among communities.

The Chairman made the disclosure while on a visit to the Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle on Thursday.

The Minister was in the Local Government Area for an assessment of troops’ performance in the fight against bandits.

He said, “bandits have taken over parts of my Local Government Area and act as traditional rulers, and judges.

“They have become authority of their own. They even mediate and settle disputes in communities.”

The Chairman described the development as very painful. He regretted that the Local Government have no control or authority over the people in that axis, including his own village, Kamarawa.

He further explained that Bello Turji, Dan Bokolo, Garso and many bandits kingpins were moving freely in the area.

Kamarawa regretted that they are exercising their powers over their people without any challenge.

He said, “Part of this Council Area had become a safe heaven for bandits and other criminal gangs.

The Chairman, therefore, pleaded with the Minister to come to their aid.

He informed that the bandits also collect levies from and the communities at will.

Kamarawa listed parts of the affected communities controlled by the bandits in Sokoto to include: Gebe, Kamarawa Arume and Bafarawa. He also stated that many other villages along the border with Niger Republic are affected.

The Chairman added that only one village named Gundumi is still standing.

He lamented that all the other villages had been deserted along the 120 kilometer-road due to activities of bandits.
