Productivity is the production of goods and services in line with set standards. Any deviation from such standards introduces inferiority into products. Such substandard products fail to meet the expectations of procurement.
Over the years, the standards of productivity have fluctuated in line with the philosophy of decision makers in industries. Obviously, philosophy always influences decisions that inform productive actions.
If the philosophy of the industrial think tank neighbours on excessive profit-making, all manner of shady practices would be used to achieve it
The signals of such negative philosophy would be passed on to the operational downstream. There could be instructions to alter the qualities and quantities of products. To introduce inferior or alternative raw materials into productivity. And to downsize staff population, increase their workload and decrease their emoluments.
In such bastardized situations, workers work with bruised hearts and distressed emotions. They shirk the work and generate inferior products to the detriment of consumers.
Such is the prevalent conditions in Nigeria right now. And they are getting worse on daily basis. All manner of inferiority has been visited to the productivity of almost all the goods in the market places.
From electronic to electrical; architectural to mechanical; nutritional to medicinal, products have gone not only inferior but beyond it!
Buildings are collapsing all over the places and killing people. Fuel, gas and other petroleum products now burn and evaporate faster into the thin air.
Children’s biscuits are now perforated with duping designs. They are downsized and also sold very costly. Matches sticks hardly kindle, lighters also fail to lighten but spoil very easily.
The plethora is so overwhelming that its exhaustive enumeration will produce frightening statistics.
It is frightening indeed! Productivity in the grip of inferiority! What an embarrassment!
