The Nigerian Senate has urged the Federal Government to increase budgetary allocation to federal universities across the country in the 2025 Budget. This is even as members 0f the upper chambers of the National Assembly stated that universities needed to allocation to take care of teething problems confronting the institutions.
The lawmakers also resolved to mandate the relevant Committee of the Senate to liaise with the Ministers of Finance, Education and other relevant ministries to immediately take steps to checkmate the increasing spate of brain drain in the country.
The Senate made this statement following a resolution it reached after a lawmaker, Senator Anthony Okorie raised the on the condition of federal universities in the country.
Okorie had decried the growing challenge of brain drain and its consequences on the educational development of the country.
He bemoaned the significant outflow of highly educated professionals in Nigeria, especially in the academia.
Okorie stated that the quest for better working conditions by these professionals is exacerbating the skill gap in the workforce of the country.
The lawmaker also expressed worry over the poor remunerations and working conditions of Nigerian lecturers.
He noted that the lecturers remunerations were last reviewed over 15 years ago, it remains among the poorest in the world.
Okorie contended that the poor remunerations have continued to triggers the continuous loss of experienced hands from the nation’s universities to other countries.
The Senator mandated the relevant Committees and the Senate to liaise with the relevant ministries and stakeholders in the educational sector.
He urged them to work in synergy with the Ministers of Finance, Education and other relevant ministries to stem the spate of brain drain in the sector.
