The operatives from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, early hours of Saturday raided students’ hostel of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto.

According to reports, new fewer than 40 student were allegedly arrested.

A senior staff of the school who spoke on condition of anonymity confirmed the development to journalists.

Though he said as he is not authorized to speak with journalists, he stated that no fewer than 40 students were arrested during the raid.

He however disclosed that after some level of investigation by the agency, 30 of the students have been released. While the remaining 10 others are  still with the EFCC.

The source stated that the university authority is discussing with the Commission to unravel the circumstances behind their arrest. And to know why the school was not involved in the exercise.

An eyewitness who spoke with PUNCH on condition of anonymity revealed that the raid occurred in the campus. He said the students were arrested in the Kwakwalawa and Gidan Yaro Communities within the Campus.

“He said dozens of students were picked up by the EFCC operatives, PUNCH reported.

Also, one of the students who simply identified himself as Abdul also confirmed the incident. He said the EFCC stormed their hostels around 4 am. And arrested several students indiscriminately.

“It was like a scene from a movie. We thought they were kidnappers at first. But then we saw the EFCC logo on their vests.”

Abdul claimed that the EFCC operatives did not provide any explanation for the arrests or produce any warrants.

According to PUNCH, another student who also spoke on condition of anonymity condemned the raid. He stressed that arrest was not acceptable in a civilized society.

“This is unacceptable. We demand answers from the EFCC. What were they looking for? Why did they arrest our colleagues? he queried.

However, the university management have not issued any information on the development.

This is even as the phone number of the Public Relations Officer of the University, Ismaila Muhammad, could not be reached.
