The Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno has stated reasons why the State Government has not started the commencement of the payment of the new minimum wage to workers in the State.
This Governor disclosed this during a press briefing at the Government House in Uyo, on Saturday. He stated that he was waiting for the Federal Government to release modalities for the payment.
Recall that after a protracted protests and a strike by the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC), the Federal Government, agreed in July on N70,000 as the new minimum wage.
The new minimum wage replaced the former (N30,000), which expired in April.
However, after signing the new minimum wage into law, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu set up a Committee to work out a consequential adjustment.
Speaking at the press conference to mark the events of the Akwa Ibom’s 37 anniversary, Eno said the State Government was committed to paying the new minimum wage. He, however, stated that Government was waiting for a ‘modality’ from the Federal Government.
