The University of Maiduguri has announced the resumption of academic activities on Monday, September 23. The institution would be opened for learning after it was shut down due to the devastating flood that rocked the city recently.
This was contained in statement by the Registrar of the institution, Ahmad Lawan, on Thursday.
The statement read in part, “I write to inform all staff and students that the university that Management has approved the resumption of lectures and office duties with effect from Monday 23rd September 2024.”
The Registrar said academic activities are set to resume after the flood water has receded. He also noted that the situation in the state has improved.
“This followed the improvement in the situation in Maiduguri and its environs. As well as the rehabilitation and re-opening of the major access roads to the University,” Lawan added.
On Tuesday, September 10, announced the suspension of academic activities. As well as temporary closure of offices due to the flooding of the campus.
Recall that Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, experienced its worst flood in 30 years. This was after the Alau Dam ruptured on September 10.
The Alau Dam which is located in the Jere Local Government Area, some 20km away from the metropolis, broke out in the early hours of September 10. Causing flooding along the riverine areas, including major roads, zoos, schools, hospitals and other public facilities.
The devastating flooding has been described by the United Nations Human Rights Refugee Council (UNHCR) and residents of the Maiduguri Metropolitan Council (MMC) as the city’s worst flood experience in the city.
This is when compared to the flood that swept the city in 1994.
National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has also described the flood as an unprecedented occurrence.
