The Government of Edo State has confirmed that all students trapped in the collapsed three-storey building in Benin City have been successfully rescued. It stated that there were no fatalities recorded.
This was contained in a statement on Saturday evening by the Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media Projects, Crusoe Osagie.
He, however, stated that an investigation is underway to determine the immediate and underlying causes of the building collapse.
According to reports, the building, which was located on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, collapsed early Saturday morning. This was following a downpour of rain in the city.
“The Government confirms the collapse of a three-storey building on Ekhator Street, off Ekosodin Road, beside the University of Benin, Ugbowo, Benin City. A rescue team was promptly deployed, and all trapped students have been rescued alive. And are currently receiving medical attention.”
“Emergency responders, including the Edo State Fire Service and officials from the Edo State Command and Control Centre, were deployed to the scene. As of now, no fatalities have been recorded. Excavators and other heavy equipment are on-site to clear the rubble. We want to remove any remaining parts of the distressed building,” Osagie said.
Meanwhile the Government has also ordered a thorough investigation into the incident. And also an audit of nearby buildings to assess their structural integrity.
The Special Adviser also expressed appreciation for the efforts of the emergency responders. He thanked the community members who assisted in managing the situation.
“We commend the gallant work of the emergency responders and the good Samaritans in the community. They helped to manage the situation,” he said.
