Amidst growing concern against the alarming rate of kidnapping incidents across the country of late, the Nigerian Police has expressed hopelessness in the fight against the menace.
This is even as a senior Police officer revealed that kidnappers have devised a new method to evade detection.
This was contained in a report by PUNCH.
According to report, the officer stated that kidnappers now use their victims’ phones to make calls. And also use same to communicate with families and friends of their victims.
This tactic, the officer said, has made it increasingly difficult for security agents to track and apprehend the kidnappers. He pointed out that call tracking devices are no longer effective.
The officer emphasized the need for alternative tracking devices and technologies to combat this new strategy. He stressed that relying solely on call trackers is insufficient given the tactics of the kidnappers.
The officer, therefore, urged for the deployment of more advanced technologies, such as GPS tracking and digital forensics. He noted that the provision of these devices would help the police to stay ahead of the kidnappers. They will also help to ensure the safe rescue of victims.
Additionally, the officer suggested that security agencies need to invest in other tracking devices that can detect and locate kidnappers through other means. These, he said, include IP addresses, social media activity, and online transactions among other devices.
According to findings, Nigerians are of the view that it is no longer enough to simply react to kidnapping incidents after they have occurred. Rather, the need for security agencies to adopt a more proactive approach by using improved modern-day technology. They maintained that these would help to track and apprehend kidnappers before they strike.
According to the report, this can be achieved through the deployment of advanced surveillance systems and data analytics. Also the use of intelligence-gathering techniques that can help identify and locate potential kidnappers.
The report added that the Federal Government must demonstrate the political will to tackle the menace of kidnapping headlong.
This, they said, is by addressing its root causes such as poverty, unemployment, and social inequality in the society.
