No fewer than seven persons have been declared missing after a torrential rainfall that caused intensive flooding in Niger State on Friday. Also no fewer than 89 houses were reported to have been submerged. While hectares of farmlands washed away after the heavy downpour.

According to reports, the incident occurred in Mashegu and Magama Local Government Areas of the State.

IVNTV NEWS gathered that the rainfall lasted for almost 10 hours which eventually led to severe flooding in the areas.

The Niger State Emergency Management Agency, NSEMA, has also confirmed the development. It added that local divers in the affected areas are still on a rescue operation.

“The rainfall was severe and lasted for about 10 hours on Friday. Search and rescue operations are still on in the affected communities.”

“Communities affected are the environs of Sabon Pegi in Mashegu Local Government and Nassarawa community of Magama Local Government,” the statement added.

To forestall further losses, the Agency has therefore renewed its appeal to people in the river banks to move to the uplands. This, it said is because more rainfall are expected and could cause more flood in the affected areas.

Recall that the National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA had listed Niger State as one of the States to be affected by flood this year. The agency had listed 17 out of the 25 Local Governments in the State to be affected.
