The Supreme Court of Nigeria will today, Friday, August 23, deliver final judgments in the disputes in the conduct of governorship elections in Bayelsa and Kogi States in 2023.
The apex court had on Monday entertained arguments from lawyers representing various candidates in the disputes. And thereafter, reserved judgments.
However, the Justice Garba Lawal-led 5-man panel of justices on Thursday, communicated the counsels in the legal tussles of its readiness to pass judgments. The apex court gave Friday, August 23 for delivery of judgments.
DAILY POST quoted Barrister Tunde Falola, who is counsel to the governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the gubernatorial election in Bayelsa State, Timipre Sylvia, as having confirmed the development. Falola confirmed that the apex court has served notice of judgement delivery on them, DAILY POST reported.
The defendant in the governorship election disputes is Douye Diri of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). Diri was declared winner of the Bayelsa poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.
For Kogi State, the dispute is between the declared winner of the election and candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Usman Ahmed Ododo and his challenger, Muritala Yakubu Ajaka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Recall that both Douye Diri and Usman Ahmed Ododo had won at their respective State Governorship Election Petition Tribunals. The duo also won their opponents at the Court of Appeal, both in Abuja.
However, the judgments by the Supreme Court, whichever way they go, will mark the end of the legal tussles.
