The Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, NNPCL, Mele Kyari, has decried the impact of smuggling on the oil sector.
Kyari stated this while appearing before a Senate Ad-hoc Committee over alleged economic sabotage in the petroleum industry in Abuja on Wednesday.
Addressing the Senator Smart Adeyemi-led Committee, Kyari said, “We all know what happens. Smuggling does take place… No one can deny that smuggling takes place across our borders. Both for PMS and any other commodities that you can think of. This is real. Mr. Chairman, when the details come, we will tell you what we know,” the NNPCL boss said.
Kyari, however, exonerated the personnel of NNPCL in any shady deals in the importation of fake fuel into the country. He stated that personnel have nothing to do with substandard importation of petroleum products into the country.
According to him, “as the GCEO of the company, I have faced undue media attacks from persons doing everything to create the impression that NNPCL is sabotaging the nation’s economy.
“The company is “faithful and will not lie” to the country,” Kyari said.
The Group CEO, however, noted that the oil and gas industry in Nigeria is bleeding. He pointed that there are things he knew but could not say them in public.
He, however, promised to wait until “the time comes”.
To maintained transparence in the conduct of the Ad-hoc Committee hearing, Kyari said the committee sessions be televised live. This is to enable Nigerians to monitor what is going on in the oil sector.
Recall that oil sector has been on the spotlight for some weeks now. This is following the outcry of Dangote that some cabal in the oil sector are after his refinery.
