With the nationwide hunger protest in its Day 4, the Kano State Government has relaxed the curfew it imposed to checkmate violence in the State.
Recall that protest in Kano turned violent when the protesters resorted to looting and destroying property in the State.
The relaxation of the curfew was announced by the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Dantiye.
He disclosed this to newsmen in an audio he sent on Saturday. The Commissioner added that the curfew would be relaxed from 8am to 2pm daily.
He said, “Having reviewed the curfew and worried by the situation the people have gotten in as a result of the curfew, His Excellency has directed that the curfew be relaxed now from 8am, tomorrow Sunday, August 4 to 2 pm respectively,” he said.
Dantiye, therefore, reiterated the State Government’s commitment to the protection of lives and property of Kano residents.
He said, “The Government is concerned about the security of lives and property. That was why a curfew was imposed for 24 hours.
“This will continue, and the situation will continue to be reviewed. When the security situation improves, the decision will be taken a further review. I hope the people will comply.”
Dantiye noted that the decision to relax the curfew is to enable people go about their normal businesses within the period.
The Commissioner, however, used the opportunity to extended the Governor’s condolences to the families of those that lost their loved ones.
He said, “The Governor extends his condolences to the families of the people that lost their loved ones. And to those that lost their property in the few days of protests that was hijacked by hoodlums.”
The Governor also thanked the people for cooperating with the State Government, as well as complying with the Government’s directives.
Recall that on Thursday, August 1, Governor Yusuf imposed a 24-hour curfew after the nationwide #EndbadGovernance protest turned violent.
During the protest, hoodlums attacked and looted public and private properties in Kano. The facilities looted included the newly built Nigeria Communications Commission (NCC) Industrial Park. The multi-million Naira building was looted and also set ablaze.
According to the Minister of Information, the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre was scheduled for commissioning next week.
But in the course of the protest some youths besieged the facility.
According to a viral video, some of the youths were seen making away with desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other appliances from the centre.
However, the Kano State Police Command has stated that about 269 suspects have been arrested. These are those were alleged to be involved in looting of public properties during the protest
