Following the violence, looting and destruction that marred the nationwide protest on Thursday in some States across the country, some Governors have placed curfew in their States.
One of the States where curfew has been imposed is the Jigawa State. The Governor, Mallam Umar Namadi on Thursday declared a 24-hour, until further notice.
This was contained in a speech delivered by the Governor on Friday night. He announced the imposition of the curfew across the State.
Namadi explained that the curfew will be relaxed on Friday, 2nd August, 2024, from 1200hrs to 1430hrs. This, said, is to allow Muslim ummah to observe Friday (Juma’at) prayer.
“No vehicle would be used in going to the mosque,” the Governor said.
He, however, added that the decision would be reviewed after assessing the situation.
In Katsina State, the Government has imposed a 24-hour curfew in Dutsinma Local Government Area.
This was contained in a statement by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG), Alhaji Abdullahi Garba-Faskari. He announced the decision in a statement issued in Katsina on Thursday.
The statement was signed by the Director of media at the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu-Yar’adua.
The Statement stated that the Government under the Acting Governor, Malam Faruq Jobe has also banned unusual gatherings and all types of protests across the State.
He explained that the decision of the ban followed an emergency State Security Council meeting convened on the report of the breakdown of law and order in some parts of the State.
The statement read, “The acting Governor had earlier received a group of Civil Society Organizations who were on a peaceful demonstration at the Government House and pledged to deliver their messages to the appropriate authority.
“However, later the Government received reports that some miscreants had hijacked the protest. And they unleashed their ulterior motives of shop breaking, looting, and vandalization of public and private property.
“Therefore, the Government found it necessary to impose these measures to safeguard people’s lives and propertY in the State,” he said.
The statement added that people are warned to remain calm and law-abiding. As the security agencies had been directed to arrest any individual or group of persons for violating the orders.
It stated that the acting Governor has appealed to the people in the state to continue with their legitimate activities within the free movement period.
In a complementary statement, the Kano State Police Command said it has begun enforcement of the curfew across the State.
This was contained in a statement by the Force spokesman, ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu.
He said: ”We wish to dismiss the misinformation that police personnel shot live ammo at protesters, resulting in loss of lives.
“We assure members of the public that our officers exercised the maximum level of restraint. And they displayed professionalism in handling the violent protesters.
“There is no record of any fatalities resulting from police actions as of the time of these reports.”
In Nasarawa State, a curfew has been imposed Keffi Local Government Area. This is in a bid to address escalating unrest linked to ongoing hunger protests in the area.
The curfew announced by the Keffi Local Government Chairman, Muhammad Baba Shehu will run from 6:00 pm to 6:00 am.
According to the statement, the decision aims to curb the growing disorder and prevent looting activities perpetrated by unidentified persons.
The Chairman pointed out that the curfew was imposed after extensive consultations with security agencies in the State. These included the Army and other security operatives, who are fully backing the measure to stabilize the area.
