However, as was greatly feared, the protest in most city centres turned out violent.
To quell the protest and prevent violence from spreading, thereby causing more socio-cultural dislocation of the economy, the Nigerian police and other security operatives made some arrests.
In Nasarawa State, the Police Command detained 50 persons for allegedly attacking police personnel and disrupting public order during the protests.
This was contained in a statement by the Nasarawa State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Ramhan Nansel in an interview on Thursday in Lafia.

The PPRO added that the detained suspects were currently in police custody, undergoing further interrogation and investigation.
Nansel, however, assured that the violent actions exhibited by some protesters earlier on Thursday have been contained. He stated that violence was effectively brought under control by the police and other security agencies.
The PPRO said the law enforcement officers would continue to manage the situation professionally. He, therefore, ensured the residents of the State of their safety.
Nansel, however, warned those intending to incite chaos under any pretense to stay away. He stated that such actions would not be tolerated, as the full force of the law would be applied by the security operatives.
