Ahead of the proposed nationwide protest, the Nigerian army has deployed soldiers to  the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu. According to SaharaReporters, the deployment is in preparation of the proposed protest being planned by some Nigerians.

SaharaReporters observed heavy movement of military personnel especially soldiers of the Nigerian Army in the Enugu metropolis, on Monday.

“Personnel of the Nigerian Army have taken over the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Enugu and other strategic points in Enugu. This is ahead of the August 1 nationwide protests, SaharaReporters said.

“At the Akanu Ibiam International Airport Junction along old Abakaliki -Emene Road, several military personnel were seen stationed with heavy weapons.

“Also at the Abakpa Junction and New Heaven Junction along Enugu – Abakaliki Road, the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) were seen mounted with surveillance cameras.

SaharaReporters also observed that police had increased checkpoints in and around Enugu State capital.

“Most of the police checkpoints created have been avenues for extortion of money by policemen for their bosses.

“At the Okpara Square, fierce-looking policemen on combat gear were also observed all over the place.
