Benue State Government has directed Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, in 23 LGAs of the State to take delivery of new born babies free of charge.
This was contained in a statement by the Executive Secretary of the Benue State Primary Health Care Board, BSPHCB, Grace Wende.
She gave the directive while speaking at the one day review meeting of health stakeholders and development partners. The meeting which was at the Local Government level was held in Makurdi, the State capital.
Wende stated that the overview of the engagement was to strategize on programmes and interventions to improve maternal and child health services in the various Local Councils.
She also announced the distribution of free delivery kits called Mama Kits to expectant mothers.
Declaring the meeting open, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Yanmar Ortese emphasized the importance of the review. She said it will bring about improvement in the health sector.
Speaking at the meeting the Manager of Impact Project, Ene Ochai expressed optimism at the outcome of the review. She said the meeting is geared towards an in-depth analysis of activities of Primary Healthcare facilitates at the grassroot.
“It is hoped that following the review, Primary Healthcare Centres in the State will receive the much desired boost. And to sufficiently reduce maternal and child mortality,” she said.
