Fire outbreak on Thursday devastated Karu Market in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja  leaving traders counting losses in millions.

According to reports, goods and property worth billions of Naira were reduced to ashes. This is even as leaving traders and shoppers in in the market in a state of despair.

Though the FCT Fire Service with a station in Karu Market responded to the incident, their efforts could not contain the inferno.

According to source, the large crowd of people flocking to the area could not help the operations of the fire service officials.

People were seen wailing and lamenting the wanton losses and destruction of the market by the fire.

Traders, who were affected by the inferno were seen wailing uncontrollably as their wares were lost in the inferno.

One of the victim lamented, “Everything has burnt down. I could not recover anything. This is where we feed from o. Ah, my children’s school fees are there.”

“I cannot hold myself, I am in pain – I don’t know if government can help us. My money that has gone here is over ₦10 million. I am tired and I don’t know where to start,” the woman cried in anguish.

To make sure that the chaotic situation was managed, members of the Nigerian Army were drafted to the scene of the fire. They, therefore, ensured  that hoodlums and street urchins did not cash in on the fire outbreak to steal items in the market. t

According to Channels TV, the fire outbreak may have been caused by an electrical surge. That was given the speed with which the fire spread and engulfed parts of the market.

“The full extent of the damage is still being assessed. However, it is clear that the fire has left a significant impact on the community.

“The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and officials are working to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the outbreak,” one of the officials said.
