The organized Labour; the Nigerian Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC, have told President Bola Tinubu not to submit any figure for the new minimum wage to the National Assembly without consulting them.
The Unions warned that workers would continue to demand payment of minimum wage arrears, no matter the time its takes to sign it into law.
This was revealed in a statement by the President of Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero and his counterpart from Trade Union Congress (TUC), Festus Osifo, on Thursday.
The Union leaders spoke on the sideline of the ongoing International Labour Conference, ILC, in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to reports, NLC President, Ajaero said he expects President Tinubu to invite tripartite Committee to a meeting. He noted that at the meeting the issue of the ability to pay will be discussed.
The NLC President noted that this important before Mr. President will send any final figure to NASS.
“We do not expect the President to present a final figure to the National Assembly without consulting with the parties involved. These are the Organized Labour, Organized Private Sector employers, and State Governors.
“Everyone will still come together to discuss before transmission to the National Assembly,” Ajaero said.
Recall that Organized Labour has insisted on N250,000 for the new minimum wage. This is even when the Federal Government has stated its willingness to pay N62, 000.
The Organized Private Sector, OPS, also stated that their readiness to pay N57, 000.
Recall that the current minimum wage is N30,000.
