The Government of Enugu State has sealed off the corporate headquarters of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC for threatening to disconnect power to the seat of power in the State.

According to reports, EEDC had issued a disconnection notices to some customers, including the Government House over unpaid electricity debt.

However, irked by the notice, the State Government ordered the sealing of the corporate headquarters of the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company, EEDC, and its offices in the State.

This was contained in a statement by the Head of Corporate Communications EEDC, Emeka Ezeh, on Tuesday.

According to the statement the sealing of the offices the Disco has disrupted its operation.

Disclosing the bone of contention, EEDC stated that the Enugu State Government alone is indebted to company to the tune of N1 billion. The amount, it said, constitute part of  N180 billion unpaid electricity debt in the region.

Ezeh said, “On arriving for work this morning, we were surprised to meet our Corporate Head Office sealed by the Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA).

“This development is strange. Because there was no notice of any sort by the agency to our organization.

“We were informed by the Security Men on duty that in the early hours of today (Tuesday), at about 1.53 am, a group of men came and locked up the gates,. They claimed that the State Governor directed the action.

“Our Abakpa, Awkunanaw, and Ogui District offices were not spared. As their gates were equally sealed and locked.

“As of now, there has not been any clear information/ communication from ECTDA explaining their action.

“We, however, suspect that this action might not be unconnected to the notice of disconnection published by EEDC. The company had informed indebted customers of the intention of EEDC to commence disconnection today, Tuesday 11th June, 2024.

“Enugu State Government happens to be one of the indebted customers with over N1 Billion owed to EEDC. It is important to state that the majority of the State Government’s facilities are metered. (So, it is not a case of estimated billing).

“EEDC has about N180 billion as debt owed the company. The company had concluded plans to commence disconnection of indebted customers,” the statement read.

Recall that EEDC had issued disconnection notice to the Enugu State Government and other Southeast State Governments. The company stated that it is being owed by other entities in the region about N180 billion in unpaid electricity bills.

However, by the time of this report, the Enugu State Government has not made statement on the sealing the EEDC offices.
