The Minister of Works, David Umahi has expressed dismay over the activities of vandals on the Second Niger Bridge at Onitsha, Anambra State.

Umahi’s feelings were disclosed in a statement by his Special Adviser on Media, Uchenna Orji.

According to him, Umahi described the vandalization of the bridge as cruel.

The vandals had destroyed the expansion joins used to absorb the thermal expansion of the Second Niger Bridge.

Speaking on the development, the Minister expressed sadness that a human being could destroy such a critical and strategic treasure. He pointed that the bridge has immense economic benefit to the contiguous States and indeed to the entire nation.

Umahi also expressed dismay that the activities of the hoodlums happened in spite of the presence a private security personnel in the area.

He said, “This is happening despite the presence of a private security outfit deployed by the Federal Ministry of Works to man the area.

The statement read; “The Minister condemns this ruthless destruction in strongest terms. It is a deliberate act of sabotage on a key national infrastructure that has immense socio-economic benefits to the contiguous states, and indeed, the entire country.

“It is saddening that a human being with the right senses could destroy such a critical and strategic treasure that catalyzes Nigeria’s socio-economic advancement.”

The Minister, however, promised to deploy a more formidable security architecture to forestall further havoc on the facilities.

He also said a technical team had been directed to inspect, evaluate and reinstate the damaged parts of the superstructure.

The Works Minister, therefore, placed a ransom on the head of the perpetrators.

“The Federal Ministry of Works shall promptly and handsomely reward any person or group who nabs or gives useful information on the identities of perpetrators of the vandalism of facilities on the bridge or any of our road infrastructures nationwide. We shall ensure that such perpetrators face the full wrath of the law,” he added.
