The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday recalled the suspended Senator representing Bauchi Central District at the upper chambers of the National Assembly.

Recall that Senator Abdul Ahmed Ningi suspended on March 12, 2024, for accusing the Senate of budget padding.

However, during plenary on Tuesday, the fiery Senator was recalled just some two weeks to the end of his three-month suspension. His suspension was to terminate on June 12, 2024.

Moving a motion for the recall the Deputy Minority Leader, Sen. Abba Moro, expressed regret on behalf of the suspended Senator.

Standing as a surety to the suspended Senator, Moro pledged to assume full responsibility for Ningi’s actions. He, however, acknowledged the gravity of the suspension.

After listening to the motion to lift the suspension, the President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, announced the unconditional recall of Ningi.

Recall that Ningi had in an interview granted to the BBC, accused the Senate of padding projects worth N3.7 trillion. He claimed that projects were untraceable in the 2024 budget.

The allegation, however, triggered a backlash as Nigerians raised many questions for the lawmakers.

Responding to the allegation, Akpabio, said many Nigerians would no longer trust the senate because of what Ningi said.

He said, “Nigerians are bashing the Senate. Many Nigerians will never in future come back to respect this chamber. The integrity of this chamber has been totally damaged and we wanted you to repair it with your speech.”

Ningi while been questioned on the floors of the chamber could not substantial his claims.

However, after interrogating him at plenary, Ningi was accused of mischief and suspended for three months.
