The presidential candidate of Labour Party, LP, in the 2023 General elections, Peter Obi, has mulled the possibility of a merger between the LP and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
According to the former Anambra State Governor, the merger of the two major opposition part ahead of the 2023 general election depends solely on the interest.
Obi disclosed this in an interview on NoireTV-GlobalBlackTV, on Monday.
He stated that the merger of the two parties is depended on if the interest is for the benefit of the country.
Recall that fortnight, Atiku was reported to have said that he would support any candidate presented by his party, the PDP.
But fielding question on the possibility of a merger, Obi said the condition for the merger must be in the interest of the country. He stated that the merger must not just be for elections’ sake or to just capture power.
Recall that Obi had met with some powerful PDP Chieftains in Abuja lately, including, Atiku, Saraki and Lamido.
The visit, however, drew a comment from the All Progressives Congress, APC. The party stated that the duo of Atiku and Obi were united by their mutual desperation to be president of Nigeria.
“If the merger is to be able to govern Nigeria properly and unlock all those things that will make Nigeria a better place, I’m for it.
If it’s just a merger for election or state capture, I’m not for it or part of it. I don’t want to be part of anything like that,” Obi said.
On the statement credited to Atiku to support a Southeast presidential candidate in the 2027, Obi praised the former Vice President.
He said, “I commend him and I’m grateful for his statements. Especially where he said he will support me if it (the presidential ticket) goes to the South East.”
Obi, therefore, reinterated his stand for the wellbeing of Nigerians.
“My primary concern is not personal ambition or political manoeuvring, but rather the well-being of Nigeria and its people.
“I’m not desperate to be president. I’m desperate to see Nigeria work, especially for the poor people. Because we have a lot of potential,” he said.
Obi also used the occasion to stress the importance of unity and cooperation among individuals and parties.
“It might be at the party level, it might be at the individual level. It might be at any level. But we must come together to be able to build a better Nigeria,” Obi said.
