The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has rejected the appointment of Governing Councils by the Federal Government for its tertiary institutions in the country.

Recall that the Federal Government last week released a list of governing council of the Federal Government owned institutions across the country.

But reacting to the list, the President of ASUU, Emmanuel Osodeke, declared the list illegal and unresponsive to the union’s two-week strike notice.

The Federal Ministry of Education had on Friday, May 17, announced appointees to the Governing Councils of 111 federal institutions.

Speaking in an interview with AITonline, Osodeke stated that the list does not meet the union’s demands for the reinstatement of previously dissolved boards. He claimed that they were illegally dissolved before the expiration of their tenure.

Osodeke, however, pointed that ASUU will meet on Monday, May 28, to evaluate the situation and decide on further actions.

Recall that in June 2023, President Bola Tinubu approved the dissolution of all federal tertiary institution boards. That directive, however, led ASUU to go on strikes.

The University Governing Boards, by law, oversee the election of new Vice Chancellors. a role not assigned to an outgoing Vice Chancellor or the Minister of Education.

But the acting Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, NUC, Chris Maiyaki, has reacted to ASUU President.

Maiyaki urged ASUU to consider the students’ welfare and halt its plans for strike action.
