The Enugu State Police Command have revealed how two teenagers used toy guns to carjack operations in Enugu, Southeast Nigeria.

Disclosing this through its spokesman, Daniel Ndukwe, the Police, however, said the two teenagers have been arrested over alleged armed robbery.

The police spokesperson in the state, Daniel Ndukwe, disclosed this in a statement on Friday night.

Ndukwe who disclosed this to newsmen on Friday, identified the suspected teenagers as 18-year-old Favour Akabue and 19-year-old Chiemezie Obayi. The duo are both resident at Trans Ekulu area of Enugu East Local Government Area of the metropolis.

According to Ndukwe, the police received a tip-off that the suspects allegedly used toy guns to snatch a Honda car from an unidentified male victim. The incident, he said, happened around 5:05 a.m. on May 3 in Amaetiti-Akwu, Achi Community in Oji-River Local Government Area.

The police spokesperson added that the suspects also allegedly robbed the victim of his money, mobile phone, and other valuables during the attack.

Ndukwe pointed receipt of the distress call, police operatives serving in Oji-River Police Division in collaboration with members of a Neighbourhood Watch Group, moved to the area. They gave the suspects “a hot chase” and subsequently arrested them at about 5:20 a.m. on the same day.

He stated that the police operatives consequently recovered the snatched car from the hoodlums.

Upon their arrest, Ndukwe said, the police recovered two imitation revolver pistols and a syringe containing a liquid substance suspected to be acid. The police also recovered other exhibits from the suspects.

In a related development, Ndukwe said on May 7, police detectives serving in Awkunanaw Police Division arrested another armed robbery suspect, David Ogah Bassey, 31, popularly known as Onye army.

He said the suspect’s arrest followed the receipt of a report from a tricyclist (Keke). The informant had told the police that a gang of three armed robbers robbed him of his valuables. The incident happened at about 10 p.m. on May 6.

He said the tricyclist, alleged that the suspects robbed him of his undisclosed amount of money. They also collected from him, mobile phone and other valuables. He said the incident occurred while he was conveying them to Gariki, Awkunanaw in Enugu South Local Government Area.

“Upon leading the detectives to the scene of the incident, the suspects sighted them and attempted to escape. They were, however, one of the suspects was caught and firearm recovered from him.

“Ndukwe added that the other members of the criminal gang escaped.

“The victim was able to identify the suspect as one of the same armed gang members that robbed him the previous night.

He stated that one locally fabricated Beretta-like pistol was recovered from the arrested suspect.

The police spokesman said all the arrested suspects will be arraigned upon completion of investigations.
