The main opposition party in Nigeria, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP has vowed to resist Nigeria being turned into a one party state.

This was disclosed by the former Senate President and Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of PDP, Senator Adolphus Wabara.

Speaking on the dominance of the All Progressive Congress, APC in the country, Wabara stated that tendency would be resisted.

This is coming on the heels of the mass defection that has besieged PDP in recent weeks.

Recall that last week gale of defection hit Imo State in the Southeast region of Nigeria.

The former Governor of Imo State, and former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Emeka Ihedioha, on Tuesday, resigned his membership of the PDP. The former lawmaker and founding member of PDP said he was leaving the party due to the lingering controversy over the position of the PDP National Secretary.

And barely 24 hours after Ihedioha’s exit, a wave of resignation hit the PDP in Imo State. This followed the alleged resignation of some of some key members and officials of PDP in Imo State.

Some of the National officers who had allegedly resigned from the PDP included: a BoT member, Chief Chris Okewulonu.  Four zonal officers – Stanley Ekezie, ex-officio Zonal Officer; Chief Austin Okeke, Zonal Publicity Secretary; Chief Emeka Nwokeke, Zonal Organizing Secretary and Zonal Woman Leader, Ruth Nkwocha.

Others who left the party include three State officers and a Local Government Chairman of the party in Imo. They are namely: Kissinger Ikokwu, State Legal Adviser; Mazi Emenike Nmeregini, State Publicity Secretary; Chief David Abanihi, State Assistant Treasurer and Hon Sambazz Iheaturueme, Obowo LGA Chairman.

Also to have left the party are the former member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Obinna Onwubuariri. Chibuzor Agulana, Prof Obioma Iheduru and Hon Amarachi Owuamanam.

But reacting to the development, Wabara said the PDP BoT would swiftly wade into problem to halt further exit.

Senator Wabara said that the BoT would not allow self-seeking individuals to be used by the ruling party to destabilize PDP.

“The BoT will wade in expeditiously to save the deliberate and planned extinction of this great party.

He said “The BoT with the array of distinguished men and women of invaluable experience and integrity will surely salvage the party.

Wabara stated that the BoT did it once and shall do it again no matter whose ox is gored.

“The BoT will never allow the APC to use some characters in the PDP to turn this beautiful and sweet Nation (Nigeria) into a one party state,” he said.

The former Senate President said PDP had an array of seasoned politicians capable of weaving whatever internal challenges rocking the party.

He, therefore, expressed optimism that very soon, whatever grievances some members of the party had would be amicably resolved.

Recall that Wabara had just before the National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the PDP in Abuja, expressed confidence in the unity of the party. He had said that those expecting PDP to implode would be disappointed.
